Going a bit Gothic …..

As the days shorten the weather here in Yorkshire gets a bit gothic, especially as halloween draws near and I’ve got to say I do love it!

We’ve always had a soft spot for all things dark and brooding and that comes across clearly in what we create and produce, so we decided that to celebrate Halloween we’d gather all our gothic inspired creations in one department in the store, so here’s a selection from our BRAND NEW Gothic Gifts, Art & Jewellery Section.

I hope you enjoy our Halloween inspired gothic offerings, they are eco-friendly and if you’d like to read more about celebrating an eco-friendly Halloween, then check out this blog piece.

Thanks & have a great Halloween

Japan – you are always on my mind.

Japan, it’s culture, place and people facinate Johnny and I and we’d love to visit. But, we live on the other side of the world, in Yorkshire, so it’ll need a lot of saving up and take some time to get there. Despite the difference in languages, culture and the great physical distances, I love that there are also similarities. Yorkshire and Japan a both hilly and cold at times, tea drinking has big place in our hearts and Kintsugi – the Japanese method of repair that creates beauty from damage, feels very akin to the Yorkshire ‘make the best of it’ spirit. To bring a little of Japan to Yorkshire Johnny & I like to visit Japancentre.com – they delivery fantastic Japanese treats worldwide!

So it’s no suprise that the facintion with Japan has inspired Johnny to explore that theme in his art. He’s done several pieces, which explore facets of Japanese culture and our relationship with it, as observers. We’ve turned the original handpainted and drawn pieces into digital form and they’re available as t-shirts, hoodies, and art prints.

Come and check out the Japanese inspired art and clothing at johnnyinthe56.com

We hope you enjoy the Japanese inspired art & clothes.

Thanks & have a fantastic day

Sarah & Johnny

PS: After I wrote this blog piece, we were talking about it, which inspired Johnny to re-visit the Japanese Sumo wrestlers and he’s done another piece on them. Check out his instagram feed for up to the minute updates on it’s progress and all his artwork.

Blonde – the story inspired by Marilyn Monroe…

The tragic story of Marilyn Monroe continues to facinate the world even decades after her death.

In life and death she’s a complex and captivating icon and her story is just as interesting, so it not a suprise that Netflix are about to drop a film adaptation of the fantastic book Blonde by Joyce Oates.

The book is an incredible read, it deftly weaves fact and fiction to create an astonishing story around her life. It envelopes you and draws you in.

It’s a hefty book and neither Johnny or I could put Blonde down. Although our reading tastes rare overlap they did on this occassion, so we both recommend it. Enough said really!

Reading Blone has sent johnny on a mission to create another Marilyn portrait and our upcoming project for August is to create some t-shirts, art prints, mugs, hoodies and some other goodies with Johnny’s Marilyn Monroe portraits.

He’s done a few portraits of Marilyn over the years and is facinated by trying to capture the complexity of her character.

I hope you get time to read the book and maybe see the film – but don’t forget the book’s usually better!

Have a great week and thanks for reading!

Creating Is Good For The Soul.

As I write this; we’re 10 weeks into isolation, my dad’s health is failing, my mum has dementia, I used to visit them 3 times a week and for the last 2 and a half months I have not seen them, it is very, very hard. However, we have to carry on and so I’d like to share what we’re doing.

Aside from spending a lots of time on the phone to mum and dad, I am eating my own body weight in chocolate and re-reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (both of which have done their bit to maintain the spirits). I’m also attempting to channel my creativity into my reclaimed vintage bead earrings and writing this blog and as Johnny’s also feeling pretty rubbish he’s doing the same with his art and it is helping….

The earrings I created from vintage recycled and reclaimed beads.

We’re also doing colouring-in, it’s a great way to relax at any age and a good family activity. I’ve also made lots of pom-poms and some cushions, As we face each day, a little time spent creating something feels like a small acheivement and it’s great to have a few wins at the moment.

It feels good to create something…… the slow, tiny sparks of inspiration gently easing the worries and anxiety, opening up the mind to reveal a world outside of our daily concerns.

So keep the faith, I say and go create something, anything: a cake, a poem, a picture, a cushion, a mudpie, take your pick ….

Keep physically distant from others & stay safe.

Thanks & Enjoy
